Dear all,

I'm a tourist in Bangalore and need to buy a sitar for a friend at home. He is a professional guitar player, but never played sitar before. The sitar should be of good quality, but not too expensive.

Can somebody tell me where I can find good shops with reasonable prices in Bangalore and how I can tell if the quality of a sitar is good?

Any information on this would be extremely helpful.
Thank you in advance!

Bangalore is a great place to buy a computer chip. Any sitar you might find - will be worthless tourist rubbish. This is not a music town. Delhi, Calcutta or Miraj - no problem.

Hi there.

Usually north Indian stuff in the south IS a bit crap but there are some shops around Chickpet Rd that deal in various types of instruments. It's not that far from the train station.

Ironically it's very rare indeed to find south Indian instruments in the north. Chennai/Madras has a good selection of north/south at Saptaswar Musicals near Luz Corner at Mylapore. I saw a lovely brown gayaki sitar there for about the same price as one in Varanasi in the north.
