Yesterday, I hurt my right index and can't put on a mizrab for at least a week. It is a nasty cut right where the wire would be. So I decided that for practising purposes I can do without mizrab and concentrate on exercises that are good for the left hand.

I wonder what others would come up with in such a situation.

You probably won't want to hear this, but maybe you should just take a break from sitar for a week?
Playing on an injury can cause much, much more damage in the long run.
Is it worth the risk?

Don't worry about the break - It's good to do once in a while anyway.
You'll find that you'll play better when you start up again

rex has it - I'd add - fill the break by singing...

Playing sitar with bare fingers can't do any harm to the healing of the injury, it is well protected. Only the mizrab would - and be horribly painful. If I'll notice anything bad, I'll stop anyway, I am not stupid
