Just uploaded this short tabla solo (just over 4 minutes)

The division is: 3 whole beats + 3 half-beats + 3 quarter-beats = 5 1/4 beats

If you count 1,2,3 normal speed, then 1,2,3 twice as fast, then 1,2,3 twice as fast again you get 5 1/4 beats. Note that the Sarangi keeps the time in the lehara in exactly that fashion by playing 3 notes, then 3 notes a double speed and 3 notes at quadruple speed.

I had always wondered why on earth he chose 5 1/4 beats. It seemed somewhat random at first, until I finally figured out that's what happens when you double the speed and double again just 3 beats (although one could also see it as halving 3 beats, and then halving it again)!

What's truly amazing to me is how he can keep track of that all the while playing tabla!
