Just found this that might of some interest:

Quote:
Ustad Alla Rakha's interview in studio during the recording of the track 'The Tree of Rhythm' for the album 'Rhydhun'. This was sadly his last recording & Interview shot a week before he passed away in 2000.
By the way, "the tree of rhythm" from the CD Rhydun is quite charming. You can hear it here:

It's alla rakha singing!

Note by the way that the description is incorrect. Sulfaktal is 10 matras, not 5, according to taalabase:

Dhin tirekite | dhin na | dhin dhin na | dhin dhin na |

One of the top ever tabla players.
I met him many years ago at a concert with Pt Ravi Shankar in manchester, UK, backstage after the performance, for his autograph. KEEP PRACTISING is what he told me. A that time I was learning tabla from Pt Manik Rao Popatkar, I recall.

I do believe he's actually composed for Indian films but under another name. Anyone remember?

Once again sooo easy to talk to. A genius sadly lost now. Although Zakhir's not doing too badly!!

According to wikipedia, his full name is indeed Alla Rakha Qureshi (hence A.R. Qureshi).

Let me confess that, while I gave it a listen, as a westerner I find the popular (or folk) style somewhat more difficult to appreciate (although I also find that I seldom seem to appreciate western popular or folk style of music as well!)
