Wow, thanks for including me in the list! Like Shen, I'm just trying my best to be true to the art, but it's hard to see myself included in a list alongside the great masters of tabla.

My votes would be for:

Pt. Sharda Sahai
Pt. Kishen Maharaj
Pt Anand Gopal Bandopadhyay
Sanju Sahai
Kumar Bose
Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri
Pt. Anindo Chatterjee
Ust. Zakir Hussein

Now, I love both of their playing, but to my knowledge, these guys don't normally perform tabla solo. They are both INCREDIBLE accompanists:

Pt. Ishwar Lal Mishra

My feeling is that soloists/tabaliyas that have a systematic approach to their playing are better artists than the flash-and-dash players.

I've been waiting to create the final poll except that the polling function isn't functioning. I've pm'd David but no reply??

To be fair I'll probably make several categories as opposed to having to choose between the younger and older players and those who are extremely promising against those who have long been established. Otherwise we might as well just pin a medal on Zakir and call it done.
If he could sing, and nature to accompany him, what need would he have for an instrument?

There was a link given (http://kippen.org/t_masters.html) which contains bios of the various masters of Tabla. In the bios, there are numerous references to clips; however, I am not able to hear them. I can't find any link to click to hear them either so I guess they are suppose to be looped in as background music. Does anybody know what might the problem be? I could never hear things on quicktime player. Like, it shows it's playing, but, I can't hear any sound. Might that be the case?
