Please comment on the teak tabli in the attached photo. I know what to look for in selecting tun tabli wood but don't know about teak. I understand that newer teak like this is markedly different from reclaimed Burmese teak and am not seeking guidance on that aspect. Thoughts on whether to approve this particular tabli would be appreciated.

Headstock inspired by 1930s Kanailal and Brother sitar. The beginnings of the tabli carving, inspired by Imdad Khan's surbahar and the same 1930s Kanailal sitar. .

Looks stunning!!! Hope it sounds as good as it looks and that they do the set up right. Setup is always the weakest part in this.

Looks very good indeed. Barend, very true. The makers who can do the setup properly are all advanced players, have to be. Hiren Roy, Murari Adhikari, Bishen Das, Ajay Shama to name just a few, all accomplished players. On the subject of wood for tablis, anyone here ever used mahogany ? I have some planks of 200 year old Cuban mahogany, the real thing. Beautiful wood, just gorgeous but maybe a bit soft. Anyone ever tried this ? I once saw a mahogany sitar, was not impressed. Anyone here familiar with the Janka scale ?

Hahaha... My dear Prof. Nick, Greetings ! I can't believe it's not butter. I have some of the most beautiful mahogany in my workshop. I refuse to accept that this wood is not suitable for sitar or other Indian instruments.Cuban mahogany has not been available since the 1950's. Worth a try, at least for a sitar tabli. What if ? I knew a sitarmaker who said teak was only good for furniture. Another who only used teak. Both made great sitars. 2 bottles of Kalyani Black Label ?
