TABLA WORKSHOP
with
Dr. MRINAL PAL

Edison, New Jersey, October 28, 29, 2017,  12 - 5 PM

The workshop is about learning and mastering the tabla the quick and easy way. It will present a systematic and scientific approach to tabla learning to eliminate spending unnecessary time and effort.

The participants will learn how anyone, with minimal musical sense, with or without prior knowledge of tabla, can develop and play compositions of any complexity by applying simple rules and logic. The technique is all encompassing and is immensely more efficient than conventional systems of learning. It is also suitable for self studies.

The workshop will emphasize the practical aspects of tabla playing. Although it will be oriented towards the beginners, tabla players of all levels will benefit from it.

The fee for the workshop is $150 (may be waived for some).  The fee includes the workshop notes.

Confirmation is required by October 21.

For further information please contact Dr. Pal at 732 494 3716, email: m.k.pal@ieee.org

Note: Due to the time constraint, the number and types of compositions covered in the workshop will be limited. However, upon completion of the workshop, the participants should be in a position to develop all kinds of compositions by applying the methodology. Those who are unwilling or not inclined to create their own compositions, can purchase his book entitled "Step-by-Step Development of Tabla Compositions From the Ground Up," ISBN: 978-81-925835-0-1. (Price US $125) The book demonstrates the step-by-step development of well over two thousand compositions of all types.

After attending the workshop the participants will question the need for a teacher, in the conventional sense, to learn tabla. They will also wonder why it took so many people so many hundreds of years to develop something which can be done so easily.

Dr. Mrinal Pal received traditional training in tabla for more than thirty years from Afaq Hussain Khan and Wazid Hussain Khan of Lucknow. He has also spent many years studying the repertoire and styles of the leading exponents of other gharanas (schools). His research over a period of more than twenty years has led to an extremely efficient and elegant method of developing tabla compositions by applying a few basic principles and following simple logic, starting from practically nothing. The method is easy to understand and can be learned in a short time. It is not in conflict with anything taught in the traditional methods. (One will end up with everything exactly as taught traditionally, except that the learning time will be greatly reduced.). Nor does it require any change in playing styles. The method is described in detail in his book. It will benefit all tabla players wishing to improve their understanding of the art and science of tabla playing, and bring out the best in them.
