I recently repaired a tabla made by Iqbal Ahmad, whom I'd never heard of.  Apparently his family has been making tablas for generations, and I wonder if anyone here has any knowledge of him.

Thanks for any feedback you can offer.

Dr.Tom - If I am not mistaken this is Bashiruddin's son in Benares.

I think you're right taaliyan, thanks.

Perhaps not by chance, soon after I repaired the tabla he'd made, Mr. Ahmad contacted me with an offer to sell me his goods.  To make a long story short (over 80 emails now), he sent me two of his pudis as samples.

I've now mounted three (one for the repaired tabla and his two samples) of Iqbal Ahmad's skins and have to say they're really quite good.  I would probably do business with this gentleman, but it's just too difficult to communicate with him.  Maybe some of you would have better luck.

Bashiruddin was a great tabla maker and a very humble person. However, his sons are a different story - The wood is a very cheap quality and most of the work is outsourced, since they did not learn when their father was alive. It is a hit or miss kind of story. Being intimately familiar with most of Benares, I am aware of most the folks in the tabla field there.

So maybe it's a good thing this didn't work out for me.

What a hassle it turned into.  Just today I tried to compensate Mr. Ahmad for his two samples and Western Union (he has no paypal, no credit card processing and wouldn't give address to send a check) refused to send the money.

Those pudis did look and sound good, though.
