Hi

I'm new to Indian classical music and have been wondering about the status of it in modern-day India.

Is the situation somehow comparable to Western classical music in Western civilizations? For example, if you randomly picked 10 people on a busy street in any Western metropolitan city and first played Mozart and then Beethoven to them, I guess that less than half would be able to tell the difference.

In India, would 10 randomly picked people be able to differentiate between or even identify different rags?

I'm looking forward to your thoughts on this.

Best

Ian

MMM Very interesting question. As a person who regularly visits India, first 3 months of the year, I would say prob not as your general 'man-on-the-street' is more into pop - Bhangra & filmi gana, songs, than classical.
