Hi, I'm going to be buying a sitar in the next little bit (very excited), and am going to need to learn it, Duh. The website for the Sitar School Of Toronto looks really good to me, http://www.sitarschool.com/. Have any of you had any experience with the SSOT (lol)?
Or have you had any experience with any teachers in Toronto (preferably in the GTA, but not mandatory)?
Any advice on how to learn the sitar in Toronto would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Nick

Hi Nick!

I started learning sitar in Toronto about 20 years ago, but haven't been in Canada for a very long time, so am a bit out of touch with the scene.

I haven't had any experience with the Sitar School of Toronto, but maybe someone else here has?

My own teacher, Irshad Khan, teaches in Mississauga, and you can reach him through his website:

http://irshadkhan.net/

or at:

Universal Academy for Musicians, 3590 Kaneff Crescent, # 2013, Mississauga, Ontario, L5A 3X3, Canada.
Telephone & Fax: (905)-275-0325.

I'm in Hamilton for at the moment, and will be for the next few months at least, so please drop me a line if you need any practical advice. I visit Toronto quite regularly.

Good luck!!

Anwar (Sitar School of Torornto) is an excellent teacher. I have had the fortune to accompany his students on Tabla during his teaching sessions in Ottawa and these were always a blast - taught me all I know about accompanying in vilambit teentaal. A very down to earth, gentle person. You will not be disappointed. Good Luck.

Does anyone know if they will actually be posting online lessons. They have been stating they will for years. I emailed a couple of times to inquire and got no response. Is there anyone connected with the school who can say one way or the other?

I talked to Anwar a few times recently and he's working on getting the online thing going. He is also working on an instructional DVD.

I have surbahar, sitar and sarangi from Anwar. They are all excellent instruments. He is a humble and easy going type, extremely knowledgable about sitars and surbs. PM or email me if you want to talk more details.
