Friends, some of you have attended Ustadji's concerts. I had never seen him on person before. One would think that, having his DVD's and CD's nothing could be surprising but I tell you I have never had such an amzing musical experience! There is a quote from one of Mozarts admirers that says "God literally plays through the man". I say the same of Shahid Parvez. What he accomplishes technically is beyond what I have ever seen and yet it was alwauys musical, inventive, and heartfelt. My friend Todd, who is a fine tabla player and a student of Pandit Sharda Sahai of Benares, said he had never heard before a sitarist, or any non-percussionist, with a rhythmic mastery equal to Shahid's. Speaking of tabla, Ramdas Palsule was outstanding! His solos were always exactly right in mood and length and his accompaniment was exciting, extremely virtuosic but always in place as an accompanist when needed. The two artists communicated perfectly at every tihai and there were endless tihais that boggled the mind! Ustadji has an ability to see so far ahead in terms of tal that he can manipulate difficult tals wit ease and his inventiveness in creating gat tihais, ending right before the mukhra, was almost beyond human! The opening alap alone, was worth the drive to Phoenix from Tucson. The Bageshree lasted 90 minutes!! This was followed by an intermission, in which he spoke with me backstage, having heard of the "sitar player from Tucson". He commented that he could tell I played sitar by the way I listened. (I sat ten feet from him in the first row of the small auditorium). During the concert he literally looked right in my eyes while executing the most amazing phrases and taans. Intermission was followed by Raga Desh, with gats in slow rupak and ektal, featuring much outstanding tabla. Then, witout pause, he did that beautiful echo effect in a short alap to a khamaj dhun that was so beauitful that one could cry listening to it. He is a complete and sincere master of music. What a special event in this sitar player's life.

Hi Sitarman,

You are lucky to have witnessed a true magician. Shahidji is like a reincarnation of goddess Sarasvati. I have attended his live concerts a few times and have over 25 CDs by him. He has never failed to deliver the music of the highest standard. When I want to listen Sitar music invariably I reach out to his CDs or Nikhilji's CDs (past reincarnation of goddess Sarasvati). There are other outstanding sitarist as well, but IMHO no one consistently performs like Shahid. Reading your posting, I felt I was there listening his Bageshree and experiencing the same excitement, and immediately put on his Bageshree CD (SWM033 67 minutes). It is being played whilst I am typing this posting. Thank you for sharing your emotions with us.

Kanti Dattani

PS

I would like to buy Shahidji's following CDs when they eventually arrive in the local shops. Any observations on these recordings?

Great review! You could use this as a copy/paste for anyone that sees him in the future....just change the raga and taal for that particular show

Ustad Shahid Parvez was in Pakistan from August 10 till August 23. His public performances had more or less the same impact which Pete Fine mentions in his review. For those who want to read the newspaper reviews/articles about SP, here are some links:

I just read the article in Jang. It talked about 3 great pathbreaking sitarists, Vilayat Khan, RaviSHankar and Ustad Sharif Khan. With 20 years of my classical listening time, I have not heard any sitarist named Sharif Khan. Can you give me some information about him, his recording ? What is his contribution to the development of sitar ?

"Though in the last five decades the rise of the sitar has been attributed to three great musicians -- Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Ravi Shanker and Ustad Sharif Khan -- as all three developed a distinct ang. Ravi Shanker mixed the sarod with the sitar, Sharif Khan incorporated the veena into his sitar playing while Vilayat Khan stuck to the inherited excellence of basing the sitar on the gaiki ang ".

This excerpt is from an article of Sarwat Ali.

Ustad Shareef Khan died in 1981.

Ustad Shareef Khan's father was student of SP's grandfather. He loved to play in extra slow tempo (in Ara Chautala- for example). Ustad Shareef Khan was also an outstanding Veena player.

There are very few commercial recordings available but the Music Research Cell , Radio Pakistan, Lahore, has many recordings, which they don't mind giving away. The musicologist Raza Kazim - google Sanjan Nagar- has very extensive recordings of his sitar and veena music . These recordings are apparently still not available. There are about 6 recordings of Noor Zehra Kazim on Sagar Veena available on the website of Sanjan Nagar. Noor Zehra was a student of Shareef Khan.

Hope this helps.

thanks for posting that link, Hassan, very interesting reading. I thought there was a lot more mixing of musical cultures that the article describes.

PB, I posted another message which was transferred to the General Discussions. Title :For Veena players/listeners
I think the links there will be interesting for all sitarists and veena players. The audio files there are very small, but I know for sure that Mr.Raza Kazim has very extensive recordings of sitar and veena playing of Ustad Shareef Khan and of Shujaat( sitar only!). If he gets enough requests, I am sure he will make a substantial amount available online. He certainly has the resources.
