I have been maintaining a few tablas in the Phoenix area and I recently broke a strap. I attempted to use the knot pictured in David's volume on Tabla Repair and Maintenance, but it kept slipping on me. I then thought back to my Boy Scout days and remembered the "sheet bend" knot that is usually used to attached two ropes of unequal diameter. I tried it and it worked great! It's very easy to make. Here is a URL to view how to make a sheet bend: http://www.animatedknots.com/sheetbend/

Perhaps there are other knots that others have tired and had success with? I'd be interested to know what they are.

Thank You!

Or pick up a length of this Vectran strap and not only experience what it's like for your Tabla to stay in tune and balance, but forget about breaking it. Hard to even cut it with scissors. http://transtabla.us/tabla-straps/
