Which are better? Subjective question; curious to see what other people think.

It's a personal taste thing of course.

Pudis from Calcutta are usually very clean and crisp with more top end (treble)
..but they can be very thin and wear out quickly.

Pudis from Mumbai can generally speaking have much thicker syahis which gives maybe a heavier or more mid range and bottom end sound and they will usually last longer.

I'm a big fan of the Calcutta style at the moment as I like the brightness of the sound although I have to say that this is a temporary advantage and tends to fade after a few months of heavy use. The top end tails off in my experience.

NEITHER as you forgot about the makers in Varanasi. Mumtaz & Imtiaz. All the tablas I've played there have been excellent quality. They export them all over India, even TO kolkatta & Mumbai!!

Hi!

My vote goes for Mumbai pudi! Just works better for my style and weight of playing.

But this is just subjective. I'm also fan of Varanasi pudis. Hyderabad pudis are fine and sophisticated in their own way. I also have Mukta Das pudi on my 9" 3,4 kg bayan, which, after a long breaking in perioid, sounds very good too. Every style of pudis have their own character.

Agree with Nick on this one. Your poll needs to have more cities. Banaras pudis are fantastic. You also forgot Akber Miya in Hyderabad, and you can't entirely rule out Delhi - though I wouldn't vote for Delhi.

Doesn't it depend where and from whom you get them in these cities?

I've seen awful pudis from both cities tbh.

I get mine from Pune!
