I may be shot for this but oh well……

I think the Mishra family has had a history of substance abuse (as did other classical music families at the time). This may explain why many classical musicians died so young.

In this interview with the great sarodist Sharan Rani, she explains how during a performance nobody could find Anokelal because he was "Off getting drunk somewhere". Subsequently Kishan Maharaj had to step in.

Aanaddha;
Most probably you might have seen this; if not, there are some very old and rare photos of Banaras Stalwarts on Shen's website:
http://www.ethnosuperlounge.com

One more rare photo of Samtaji and info on him:
http://www.hindu.com/fr/2006/06/02/stories/2006060201330200.htm

Another source of rare photos I find it is the site
http://www.pathcom.com/~ericp/Rare%20Pictures/index.html
http://www.pathcom.com/~ericp/gallery.html

Here you will find lot rare one's; including
1. Contemplating Samtaji
2. Brothers playing together (Ram Narayan and Chaturlal)

Sorry; forgot to mention this on previous post.......a very good source of info and photos is the book Ragmala--Autobiography by the Ravi Shankar;

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1566491045/104-7198208-3430319?v=glance&n=283155

This book might be available in most local libraries in US. In fact it is a must in collection. You will find photo of Ustaad Zakir there, around less than five years old.
