More shots of my shortest surbahar being built in Varanasi earlier this year. Quality a little down as I used a digital still camera to take the video shots I pasted together. Watch out for the inuendos!!

A rare few from some old Indian films called Ladki Sahyadri Ki (Pt Jasraj 'Vandana Karo')& Bengali film 'Kshuditya Pashan' Ali Akbar Khan & Nikhil Banerjee short duet.
Thanks a lot for posting this duet, Nick!
Do you you or anybody else have the soundtrack of this movie? I've watched the movie recently - and has some excellent pieces by AAK, NB, Bismillah, Ram Narayan, etc. Would really like to have those!

I don't know if ever an LP was released but AAK's discography does list an EMI 78rpm release N77011 which features two sarod-sitar duets by AAK & NB . So there exists at least another track.

I tried to get this movie while in Varanasi this year. A shop owner friend, who goes to Kolkatta to get his CD/DVD stock, couldn't get it. I'll be in India again in January so I must get over to Kolkatta this time.

I've heard that the original reels have been lost/damaged and that is the reason we haven't seen a digital version of KP on the market yet.
Bootlegs made out of tv broadcasts do exist, though.

And, those who are interested can get the two excellent recitals by Amir Khan from Kshudito Pashan at Sarangi.Info:

I have this Bageshree from the same CD I have the others. I'll post it tomorrow. I'm sure it didn't say it was from this film. It's better quality than the link's one.

Just uploaded some more vids on

http://www.esnips.com/web/IndianClassicalVideos

Who's that behind the musos on tanpura in the guitar, santoor, shehnai clip? There's also some nostalgia clips from BBC 2 showing early footage of S D Batish & others from the 60s. A short clip of Baluji Srivastava, the blind sitarist, at home & how NOT to play Multani on sitar from an old programme from Brit ITV on John Mayer.

Is there any problem with some of these clips when you play them back?

Some more from that 'Rare Classics' cd from India.

That Amir Khan duet Bageshree from 'Kshudita Pashan' that had a lesser quality link on this thread. Two others of Amir Khan & another lovely Pahadi-Mand thumri by Suman Kalyanpur.

Just posted the classic Yaman by Ustad Vilayat Khan with my tabla teacher the late great Pt Manik Rao Popatkar. There's also a Yaman by the equally great Ustad Bismillah Khan included on the same CD.

A selection of music from Kshudito Pashan as well as a short clip showing the dance with AAK on sarod & Nikhil Banerjee on sitar. Not them on screen though, unfortunately. Picture quality a bit off but, as I've been reliably informed, the film is very rare.8)

Yes, the VK BK duet IS from a commercially available recording on CD. At the time I got it anyway. I was talking to a European guy in Varanasi who, as he was actually AT the live event, said the recording only ever seems to include the gat. The alap is nowhere to be seen.

I've had a prob with part 2 of the dowmloaded Kshudito Pashan. I could only get the first 12 mins of the final part. I'll include the music on my esnips site today as well as some other stuff from Budhaditya Mukerjee, Bilaskhani Todi from Shahid Parvez, a vocal piece form Hidayat Khan, VK's son. A lovely Adana vocal live in Varanasi & a Krishna Bhajan from Kishori Amonkar.

Vocal stuff on the vocal folder.

Just managed to upload that clip of my shortest surbahar being built in Varanasi. No idea what happened to make the last attempt shrink to less than a MB.

That is really fascinating, Nick. Every time I see them taking a saw to the nut area I cringe. It looks like they are trying to saw the head off! These types of videos are especially interesting.

Now if you could just get a really good closeup video of a master doing a Jawari you would be the King.
I have always wanted a good view of Jawari being done.
