Actually the connotations of "master" or "maestro" are not that different. The term implies two distinct but closely related things :
- a very high level in your art
- the fact that you teach to students, pupils... or in more spiritual matters, disciples.

you all may not be aware of peter van gelder, who is a disciple of Ali Akbar Khan, and who has an otherwise very intersting history in music altogether. i have heard peter play numerous times, and although i am not an afficionado, i have been deeply moved emotionally and devotionally by his playing in Fiji for my Guru, Adi Da Samraj
