I don't remember flagging this up on the forum. Apologies if I did but have forgotten. A 3 CD set of previously unpublished recordings.

Pandit Nikhil Banerjee - The Sitar Maestro (Set of 3 Music CDs)

Sagarika label ref S-3PK-0008 ~ Published September 2011
CD1 Lalit
CD2 Patdeep
CD3 Shuddha Basant and Hemant

Little/no information, I understand, on concert venues, dates or tabla players.

I've seen that here Alan, it isn't a re-hash of already released recordings? I saw Swapan Chaudhuri on some of the tracks. If you know it's new stuff I'll pick it up.....

Hi Lars, many thanks for the comments.

I have now spoken to a friend who picked up a copy and have more information to correct some of what I said before.

Firstly the Lalit is new, the only Lalit issued before was from LP.

This is a "new" concert recording, 63 minutes, I now understand Maharpush Mishra is credited on tabla.

The Patdeep is again new to the published recordings - it is with Shankar Ghosh and is 71 minutes long.

I am less sure about the third CD. This has, apparently no tabla player data, but I think it is again new to the published discography.

As a word of caution, and in the light of recent criticism on the forum of recording quality of recently-issued NB CDs, I don't think you should expect top sound quality from the set.

But I am pretty sure it is good, prevoiusly unreleased material. I haven't even had a whiff of it being out there on the internet before.

best
Alan

Got the set, about $11 US it was on sale. Playing is nice, very thin old recording and they must have burned it at home or something as when you put one CD in it says "Ibiza 2002" with some other artist! Typical Indian recording but better than not having it. All the "Nikhil Dhwani" CD's/books are now gone too from the store. Must have gotten popular.

Hi Lars,
Thanks for the update,

Ibiza 2002 Maybe better than that infamous basmati rice commercial on that Venus CD!

Any idea what that Nikhil Dhwani "big" book was? I have the songs, but a book on NB would be good, especially if our Bengali reading friends could be prevailed upon to do a spot of translation....

Ah yes, I have the rice commercial too. The book with the other CD I think is a partial biography, there are pictures of him all throughout.

Thanks for the further update. I've tracked down a tiny bit of information on that book
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Arya-Banerjee/rawnewsbytopic/keyid-421971.cms

Seems to have been released just over a year ago. First I've heard of it though, I'll have to keep my eyes open and ask around next time I'm in Kolkata.

About the Lalit, if it is from Calcutta then the tabla player was Mahapurush Mishra.

If someone can send me a short excerpt then I can check against my own recording when I get back to the UK. The concert was in Rabindra Sadan.
Again, I cant remember the year but I might have written the date on the cassette after the concert, will check.

Edit : ok it is that Calcutta concert. Hope the recording is ok. If mine is better I will make it available at some point. Someone send me a sample.

I have the Patdeep also, I think all these recordings are from Calcutta.
