Dear Brothers and Sisters

This is a forum for the discussion of these forums. In the next few weeks I will be restoring the posts and adding features. This is where YOU can discuss various features you want. things you don't want etc. I will be paying very close attention and do everything practical to implement them.

Peace

David,
I know it will look cluttered, but I think it's very useful to reference links to your articles, the index, and to the teachers/suppliers list without having to open a new page to your homesite. I think new members who access directly to the forum would also find the index useful.
I would imagine that maintenance of the forums take some considerable man hours as well as expense. If you could give a rough estimate of your expenses I'm certain that the regular and long-time members here would be more than happy to contribute what they can to help defray at least some of the cost. That's the least we could do to show you how much we appreciate your work and your generous dedication.

Best wishes,

Aanaddha

Will we be able to access private messages that were saved from the previous forum?

Hi David,

Nice look to this new forum. I'd really like to see a FAQ post for the usual topics that come up whenever new members join, and/or a recurring welcome message that directs new members to search the archives first.

David,
Thanks for replying to my e-mail to tell me where to go to find the forum.
I agree with Matt that there should be a new members "read me first" that explains how to use the search the archives feature as it does get a bit annoying to answer the same question everytime someone joins.
Another item that would be most useful is to set something up so that one could easily attach a .jpg or other image to their post. As many of our discussions focus on keeping our instruments sounding good or compairing one type of instrument to the other...a picture is worth a thousand words.
Great new look. I will often sneak a peek at the forum at work and the old yellow background just screamed "Hey, he's looking at that Indian music stuff again!". This is more subdued and won't draw attention to our screens at work. I must point out that I don't think the forum should interfere with our work, but even on breaktime, I don't want people drawn to look over my shoulder.
And you probably should post a suggested donation guideline for those of us that are more than just the casual reader. I know it takes time to maintain this site.

Dear Brothers and Sisters

I will try and address these points.

As far as what is restored, I quite frankly do not know what will be restored In the administration of this board, there is a button which says "Back up". I backed the forums up in this fashion. As far as the details of what has been backed up, I really do not have any idea as to what data was actually being backed up.

It is quite likely that when I backup the forums these particular posts may go away. However, I can assure you that all of the points have been noted.

I will try to allow users to post more graphics. One must understand that this will entail having to look at the odd porno that gets slipped in. I will certainly try and stay on top of things to clean them out as quickly as I can, but you can understand that that is just the way the internet works these days.

For those of you who are interested in such things I have upgraded:

Operating System.
PHP
MySQL
Apache
PHPBB
plus some utilities that allow me to manage many of these components.

The difficulty was to come up with a mix that would allow the most recent version of all of these things and yet still work. It is unfortunate that the most recent versions of all of these components when implemented together will not work reliably. When one is using only the most recent version of any software there are always incompatibilities which are introduced. The cumulative effect of these incompatibilities is that the forums would break and not work. Therfore the components may not be the most recent available, but they are the most recent that i can use and still make the forums work.

You are all right as far as the amount of time it takes to create and mange these forums. It takes a LOT of work. Any support is always appreciated, but i will never ask for it. I consider this to be a service that simply need s to be done.

As you know it has always been my philosophy to be as invisible as possible. A higher visibility always runs the risk of discouraging the free flow of information. It is only during times like this that I need to come to the fore so that i can connect with you to see what type of forums YOU want to have.

Peace and Solidarity

Namaste All

I wondered why I couldn't log on SOOOO
Along with the new system, I've decided to change my details too.
I go from nicksitar to trippy monkey as per my trip around India.

I'll post my adventures from Hampi up to Sri Lanka, where I am now, when I bring my little diary with me. And I can get on the sitar forum of course.

Hope all is well with you all & we'll see what this new year brings. 8)

David Saheb,
I join with the chorus of thanks and well wishes for your dedication and selfless service. Running a NPO has many "tangible" rewards but usually falls short on the funding.

I will remind the members that the $50.00 donation suggested by Annaadha is a suggestion and for some is not within their budget. So give what you can and give it with praise too Da' Oud along with the satisfaction and blessing that charitable acts done with or without recognition bring great merit. Consider that even a small donation made by many can do great things. paraphrase Groucho Marx,"From each according to their means to each according to their need".

I do have a suggestion how about a seperate section within the Sitar and Tabla forums for buying, selling or trading instruments and other music items related to ICM. That would give our fine retailors a place to share and promote their business's and allow the same folks to participate in discussions with out the issue of overly enthusiastic business people appearing to have a conflict of interests. My experience has been that the Forum is very fortunate to have the input of importers, builders and repair persons of a high level of credibility. My suggestion would, I think also allow more visability for the vendors with less chance of a valuable service or product being buried in the posts.

I'm going to post a review of the Karaseksounds sitar I recently received in a format I've lifted from another very popular website. Its a pretty good format for at least a whack at an objective criteria for reviewing a rather subjective area. If its good maybe it would merit a seperate catagory. I purchased a couple of very fine instruments based on the reviews in that forum and was able to make informed choices based on the criteria used. We all want to, and even are quite sure that "our" sitar is the mother of all sitars. It might also be of benefit to the shopkeepers and craftsmen who give so much of their knowledge to us for no renumeration.
Just some thoughts and David, Thank you!!

Dear Brothers and Sisters.

Here is an update at to how things stand. It looks like I will not be able to restore all the posts in the forum. However i will be able have them accessible through the ARCHIVE link. Most of you will remember that we had a similar situation a couple of years. The archive of all the old posts should be available in a couple of days.

The forums have been opened up for posting. However everyone will have to re-register. Sorry for any inconvenience but that is just the way things go.

This particular forum will be kept open to allow unregistered users to post for another few days. This will be so that anyone having difficulty registering can post their difficulties here so that I can work on them. If anyone wishes to e-mail me directly I am at:

david@chandrakantha.com

I will of course have to close this forum to nonregistered users eventually in order to discourage an onslaught of spam and porno.

It was this inundation of porno and other spam that was party responsible for the upgrades. It had reached a point where I was forced to clean out the stuff three times a day. I just could not continue like that.

The new log-in procedure has a security pane where you have to enter the numbers that you see in the picture. This is particularly effective at robot spam. Human submitted spam should disappear very quickly once the people realize that it will not even be on the site for more than a few hours before being deleted.

There are a number of cosmetic and navigation issues that still need to be resolved. I will be working on them in the next few days. However, even though things are not finished everyone is free to start posting.

I would also like to thank those of you who have been generous enough to make donations through the PayPal function. These donations help keep things going.

Peace and Solidarity
