If at all possible request the the tumba bracket on the right side by the big bird is not attached. They can attach the left tumba bracket as it should be under the nut. If you receive the other bracket loose you can have it attached pretty easily after determining the proper distance for your size and playing style.

Well, it all arrived today. My original rudra vin re-worked to spec. Lowered frets, lowered nut, new swan with 3 saddles for main, chicari and laraj bridges (also lowered to reflect the low frets), and a few other bits and pieces modified. We really worked on the swan and Tony gave mne one that, to my mind, is a briliant match to the hemraj leaves on the main tumbas. The pegs also reflect the concept.

Feels like a vin. Sounds like a vin. Looks like a vin. It is a vin!

Below are some quick photos. I will be taking more and doing sound recording once it is all stabilized and broken in for a bit.

Mighty sweet job.

Pov

Wow, looks great! I love the finish. I dig the carving on the toombas.
Any chance of us getting some sound samples?

I am so glad you have your baby back and can get on with your Veena practice.
I know what that feels like.
I could not wait to get my restored KL back from Scott Hackleman.
It was so satisfying to open the case and see the instrument in its full functioning glory.

Cant wait to hear it.
It is very very beautiful.
Tony did a great job.
Congratulations.

Some day I hope to get a Veena.
I would love to see what it feels like to play one.

Thanks CW - let me tell you, playing the vin is NOT as comfortable as playing a sitar. Very different, actually. But with that said, to me, the music it can produce is so worth any slight discomfort.

Thanks very much, mhamlin. I will defintely be putting up some sound samples as soon as it is broken in more. All just assembeled a few hours ago. Strings need stretching out and it needs to settle into the new environment for a few days. Woot!

An interesting note. On the new bird, Tony hollowed it out very nicely, then rejoined it.

DUUUUUUUUUUUDE

Povster my friend I am just knocked out by the update - I LOVE the bird - While the old bird was grand it did not blend with the simplicity of the hermaj carvings - it was OK but Tony's redo is PERFECT. (I been listnen' to it every day for a while now) And the pegs definately match better - But the proof is in the play and as you indicate with the lowered action and improvements to internal acoustics etc this should be one bird dat really sings.
ENJOY.

Congratulations Pov!!!

You're absolutely right about the difference between playing the sitar & veena. Bahauddin even warned me for the differences in ease of playing between a surbahar and veena!

I really take care to warm up before I start actually playing (murchana & pulling exercises), so most of the time right now I'm just spending getting ready. Also the sitting posture needs getting used to.

But all these things are balanced out by the sound....

It looks like the stems of the toombas were shortened.
Was this for a more comfortable playing position?
Or am I seeing things.

Also I see the nut was augmented with a triangular piece.
What does this piece do?

I love the new bird.
The old one was cool, but this one totally works with the design.
It is so cool.

Hey Jason! Sa is tuned to G.

CW - the stems were indeed shortened a fair amount to get the blance right and also support the playing position. The frets were all lowered 1/2". Hence the wood behind the nut had to be correspondingly lowered. The traingular celluloid Tony added is set the exact outline of the shaved down area. No real functionality but it does save the strings from cutting into the wood and I think it adds a nice balance to the jawari on the opposite end.

Surb - I agree. I am starting from scratch now with murchana done slowly, with lots of murchana starting at the karaj and working all strings.

Hey Hammy! Gaurav was around last week and I got to hang for a couple of days. Wish he could have seen this before he left but I will be sending him some photos.

Pacing more than you know. It was supposed to arrive this past Monday but I did not realize that was Columbus Day and the Post Office was closed! But Tuesday my doorbell buzzed and voila!
