question for the luthiers here:

What (besides obviously the neck width) defines the meend width of a sitar?
I have two sitars with the same neck width and on one of them I can meend much higher than on the other. And by this I mean that I pull the string all the way to the side of the neck and there is no more space left to go any higher.

And is there something you can do to increase the possible meend width on your sitar?

Yes. Steeper curve on the frets. More area to slide across.

My former teacher had a Rikhi Ram with the steeper curved frets and that was not a succes according to her.
