Hello Everyone,

I hope you are all well.

Recently had a wonderful Classical Indian Music Lesson with a great Sitarist. The course was about music and self discovery and spiritual discovery.

He said in class there are some tabla players who can speak a mantra with their Tabla like "Om Namah Shivaya" or "Ram Ram" and you can't tell if it's the hands or the mouth speaking the mantra.

Anyone know of any bols that replicate such mantras?

Thank you and look forward to your contribution.

Pick up the book by Dr. Aban Mistry. "Tabla ki bandishe". It's in devnagri script. You will find all or most of the padanth's in there. Pick up the CD by Arvind Mulgaonkar on cdbaby or amazon or itunes and there are some gats that represent sher-o-shairi and Kavita Gats by some great ustads. Hope this helps.

Great video link Scohoda

In the Benares gharana, we call these compositions bol paran. There is quite a large repertoire of them in the gharana. Kathak dancers and pakhawaj players also have many of these in their repertoire. I find these compositions fascinating; a part of tabla repertoire that I'd really like to explore further.

The great Pandit Samta Prasad also called these compositions also "Stotra Paran".
