I am posting on behalf of my friend. She absolutely loves sound of sarangi and wants to learn it but doesn't want to mess up her fingernails. Is there any instrument that sounds like it but can save her nails? Dilruba?

Also technique wise is it easier to pick up sitar or dilruba/sarangi for a complete beginner.

Thanks for answering her questions!

Yes, dilruba is much easier technique and sounds in the direction of sarangi. Also dilruba is played with fingertips lightly skimming over the strings, so easy on the fingers. Sarangi has a richer tone, but much more challenging technique and learning curve. It's not very hard on the nails if played with the nails, if played with the cuticles as is popular calluses build above the nails-

Playing on the skin above the nail is an option for her as well. I have been playing for 4 1/2 years like this and love the feel and tone from this playing style.
