Dear Daud,

I found your post with rela/laggi examples to be very very useful. Could you also please post some similar examples for Dadra and Roopak taals.

Dear Tabla enthusiast,

Here are some Dadra variations which you could play everywhere with ghazals en other songs:

Dadra Vilambit:

Dha Tin tin Ta Dhin Dhin

With mukra:

Dha Tin tin TaTa TaTa (Start this with on fourth cycle and then change to dubble speed (in this case you will be playing 3,5 cycle + mukra with ghazals))

Dubble speed bols:
Dhage Tina Kina Take Dhina Gina (5 cycles and ending with tihai: DhageTinaKinaDhax3 without pause (in this case you will be playing 5 cycles + tihai which makes 6 cycles then move back to single speed))

You can acheave the same result with:

Dhage Trkt Nage Dhrkt

Or with:

Dhage Tete Ghere Nage Tina Kina
Take Tete Ghere Nage Dhina Gina

Or with:

Dha Tin Na Ta Dhi Na

or with:

Dha Dha Ti Na Dha Ti

or with:

Dhage Nadha Trkt Dhage Tina Kina
Take Nata Trkt Dhage Dhina Gina (be care full: this one from Ektaal so you count 3 cycle, inclusive tihai)
When and how to play the tihai with above Ektal kaida:

Dhage Nadha Trkt Dhage Tin Kina
Take Nata Trkt Dhage Dhina Gina (2,5 x cycles)
Dhage Nadha Trkt Dha - - (dadra always 2 pauses in tihais)
Dhage nadha Trkt Dha - -
Dhage Nadha Trkt
Dha ........

other variations:

Dhage DhiDhi Na Dha Tin Trkt

or

DhaDhi DhaDhi DhaDhi Dha Tin trkt (open tin = tun)

or

DhaDhi NaDhi NaDhi Dha tin trkt (open tin = tun)

or of couse Ektal drut:

DhinDhin Dhatrkt tina Kata Dhatrkt Dhina

Tihai:
DhinDhin Dhatrkt tina Kata Dha - - (also 2 x pause)
DhinDhin Dhatrkt tina Kata Dha - -
Dhindhin Dhatrkt Tina Kata
Dha.......

There are countless variations in dadra. Try to play only the ones which you are comfortabla with. Master a few pieces in different speeds and play them but be carefull because dadra pushes always itself to a faster speed that is why it is importand to emphasize the sums otherwise before you know it you will be plying 1,5 beat faster than the speed you started with.

have fun!

daud

as far as fast 8 beat laggis go, I usually play:

Dha Tin Na Na Ta Dhin Na Na
or
Dha Ti Ta Ta Ta Ti Dha Dha

you can 'mix' them up as well (i.e. Dha Dha Tin Na Ta Dha Dhin Na)

Dha tin Na Na na Ke dha te

Play fast and beats 3 and 7 (the Na and dha) are played with the sharp Na on the edge. This works well with fast bajans or shabads as well.

Regards,
Amarjit.
