Dear Experts,

once again i ask for help regarding a Sitar from a local advert.

For now this is the only photograph i have. I asked the owner if he can tell me what it says on the label and he replied " Kanai Lal & Brother"

if it is indeed that, the price would be very fair. Since it would be a several hour drive i ask if anyone could confirm that from the photograph...

thanks in advance

Hey Mike,

I would say it is not a Kanailal & Brother.

The badge is not real.
This badge says "Kanai Lal & Brother", with Kanai Lal split into two words. On all the badges I know of they spelled it as one word, or Kanailal & Brother. It looks like someone tried to fake a Kanailal badge, but got it wrong. It is also a bit scrappy looking badge compared to the real KL ones.

Also, genuine KL sitars have the address under the name as "377, Upper Chitpur Road, Cal - 7"  (or Calcutta 7)
The badge you pictured says "377, Up Chit Pure Road"
They split "Chitpur" into two words and added an "e" to pur to make it "Pure"
KL did not make that badge.

This badge is a huge red flag.
To me it is dodgy as hell.

If it is for sale for a cheap price, then you could buy it as a student sitar, but it is not a high end fine sitar.
Might be a perfectly decent playing/sounding sitar, but I am pretty sure it is not an original Kanailal.
If it is cheap and appeals to you aesthetically, go check it out.
If they are charging KL prices, then run for the hills.

Here are a couple of real Kanailal badges, one script, one printed, and they show Kanailal as one word.

Thank you Cwroyds for your assesment. It looked kind of off to me, too. But now I'm more sure of it. It's just that i never had the pleasure to see a real one....

the seller would have asked about the equivalent  of 400 USD, which would of course have been a great price for a real vintage Kanai Lal. I guess he himself does probably not know....

thank you. If anyone else disagrees, tell me [wink]

kind regards
Michael

$400 would be an incredible price for a real Kanailal.
It isn't a bad price for most any decent sitar.
Might be worth going to have a look anyway, at that price.

The tabli doesn't look bad at all.
The thing that worries me is the glue you can see up at the Nut and Taar Gahan.
The Nut and Taar Gahan look like replacements glued in sloppily, and the glue also seems to go up into the decoration border on the left of the headstock.
Probably needs a good once over by a luthier.

An hour is not that far of a drive.
If you are still interested in it just as a sitar, I would go check it out.
I would check for cracks, and check for a bow in the neck.
If it all checks out, it might be a good student sitar.
You could offer $300.

Michael, you got it right, and we understand what you meant.
Your english was fine.
Trippy was joking, and was kind of saying:
"Kind of off?? That is an understatement!!"
