You don't get neat carving like on those pegs anymore even from top end makers/sellers, it looks to me like it would be at least 10-15 years old. It actually looks very nice to me, much like a mid-90s Hiren Roy GP. Would I pay 700 quid? No, but maybe 500 with a fibre case if it had a good sound.

I have no problem with the name Kanai Lal and Sons. The original Kanai Lal and Brothers closed in 1995. That is almost 20 years ago. People should be aware of these things. If they know of Kanai Lal and Brothers they should know some of the history and how their instruments were badged. And they should know these are not the same.

The originator of Kani Lal and Sons is named Kanai Lal Bhowmik. He and his sons work the shop. What is wrong with Kanai Lal and Sons?

Bhowmik made instruments with both Hiren Roy and the original Rhada Krishna Sharma. I have tried some of these instruments. Are they of Hiren Roy (pardon, I mean now Barun Ray) quality? No. Are they better than a lot of the sitars out there? Absolutely. Could they serve a student well for several years? Without question. So what's the problem?

Let describe how I feel ... this way ...

Many years ago the brilliant english comic Ricky Gervais had a BBC-HBO series called Extras (do try to catch it if you've missed it ... it's brilliant!) wherein he was a struggling actor only able to get tiny roles as an extra in various things, until he wrote his own TV-series he called "When The Whistle Blows", which became a series-within-a-series about the plight of the "working stiff" coping with their manager who is forever saying "are you 'avin' a laugh?" ... it's parody and send-up of various often cringe-worthy 70s british comedy series, as well as some newer ones.

... with me so far? Well, in that series-within-a-series is a character who's forever befuddled and always looking like a deer-in-headlights ... and he has a phrase that he can be relied upon to utter dozens of times a day, and at the moment exemplifies how I feel as he utters it below: (it's quick... just the first 3 seconds!)

(cue laugh track and ...)
