My guruji has often taught laggis but normally when I hear a laggi played, for example in vocal accompaniment, it usually first starts with an uthan. I am sure based on the feel of the song and the laggi to be played, an appropriate uthan needs to be improvised.

Are there any rules, examples, or helpful hints on how to make this happen? Are there any common uthans I can practice?

Simple examples would be fine and I can work my way up from there. I see myself mostly using this knowledge for accompaniment in folk, bhajan songs with simple taals like bhajani.

Thank you.
