Yes I've noticed this, is it down to purely gravity ?
Not gravity of the strings of course

In fact, a sitar is quite a wobbly construction and the strings relax when the neck is horizontal.
And if you put down the sitar on both its gourds, it is even worse.

But we can be glad that it is so, if the sitar was stronger, the strings could be tighter and we would regularely cut our fingers off when doing heavy mends.

Ok. Thank you very much. I was puzzled about it for a long time. Now I understand it much better.
