I use soft hands and rough hands too. When I play soft, I use my fingers more, when I play rough, I let the weight of my hand fall on the tabla more.

Someone told me they use tabla as a stress buster by beating on it very hard

I believe the original post is referring to the condition of one's skin (hands not drums).

It seems that the soft/rough hand thing is conditional. If you play and practice all the time, the powder you use reaks havock on your skin and really dries it out. In this respect, its good because your hands dont produce as much moisture. But it doesnt seem like an excess of calluses would be good.
I try to keep my hands soft - just a personal thing - except when I'm playing alot. But I was with Anindo this weekend, I noticed that his hands were pretty rough, which leads to good friction and moisture control as I mentioned earlier. I think the condition of your hands will develop according to what you need by the way you play - and how much you play.

seems like sim90 has the more romantic approach goin on -
playin it soft or rough depending on the mood
 ....

I personally keep my soft hands in a hyperbaric chamber until i need them, and my girlfriend likes to borrow my rough hands for some reason when I am not using them.
