I was looking for the Ain I Akbari on the internet - curious if the turn of the century (late 19th early 20th) English translation was being sold. It is a detailed record, kept by Akbar's vizier Abu'l-Fazl ibn Mubarak, of Akbar's court and the state of many things, including music. I found it in text form on the internet.

Begin here:

http://persian.packhum.org/persian/pf?file=00702050&ct=0

This is the first page of the three volumes.

Then select Volume III. From there select SANGITA. The information runs through these "chapters" (some just a few lines long):

SANGÍTA
The First Kind, or Stringed Instruments
The Second Kind of Instruments
The Third Kind of Instruments
The Fourth Kind of Instruments
On the Classes of Singers
The Akhá-á

Also, at the end of Volume I is a couple of pages with notations of various musicians:

Mian Tan Sen is noted here as "A singer like him has not been in India for the last thousand years."

I have on;ly begun perusing. There may well be much more on music but it is three volumes of a few hundred pages each. I wonder if a downloadable version is available.

Povster,
Thanks for this fantastic find! The book describes a number of instruments I have never heard of.... such as the karaná, ghichak, qübüz, surná and Qánún. Anyone know what these are?

Dude, that is so interesting.
Apart from the musical references I find it totally fascinating to get a look into the inner workings of the Royal court.
I am a history nut so this stuff is gold.
The lists are so interesting.
Jewels, treasure, and detail down to the kinds of flowers kept in court.
What a gem of a source for info.
