Ive been retying my frets on my sitar today and noticed that each fret has been marked on the underside in a way very similar to numbering sympathetic pegs with vertical lines corresponding to the fret order. Is this a common practice? I dont know who made my sitar. It looks like it had a badge at one point judging from the tiny holes between the bone pieces at the headstock. If anyone knows of any makers that mark their frets in this way please let me know.

Yes that's normal for them to be numbered. As for the badge someone probably removed it, it happens a lot for a number of reasons but if you bought it from a musician then he might have taken it off to not show preference to any certain maker.
