Greetings,

I don't often venture into the lofty realm of melody, but I was recently approached by an accomplished sarod player with a question that only led to more questions.

I was asked if the fish skin I use on drums might be appropriate for a sarod.  I've skinned drums with Nile River Sturgeon, and it's just too small for a sarod.  Otherwise it would be fine and maybe even great.  I've skinned other stringed instruments (kemenche, banjolino, etc.), so I have some idea about this.  It would certainly be beautiful.

I could go on and on about this and how I've thought of trying bigger fish, but I'll spare you that and just ask my questions.

Does anyone know of any skin other than goat being used on a sarod?  Any fish skin even if it wasn't NRS?  I figure anything is possible.  I understand wood is now being used (I imagine it quite thin).  Has anyone tried this wooden tabli version?

Thanks.
