Hi All,

I heard this so many times but no idea what the theme is. anyone know? Seems often played by farrukhabad gharana people and by Thirakwa-ji.

Yes - this is the famous chalan-rela-rava played by Farukhabad folks. The chalan is based on the theka of Adha-Teental or Sitarkhani ( dhaagdheengdha dhaagdheengdha ....) - the actual bols of the chalan may vary but the movement is based on this theka. In the rav, the composition is filled up with bols thus : dhatrgttg dhintrgttg dhatrgt / dhatrgttg dhintrgttg dhatrgt / dhatrgttg dhintrgttg dhatrgt / dhatrkttk tintrkttk tatrkt

This is an amazing composition and I have been chasing it on and off for a few years now. I wish I could play this - some day, perhaps :-)

wow thats really crazy you have to play that fill in a span of 4 beats. Sounds so awesome though. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Do you happen to know if coposition is covered in any tabla book, like in vintage tabla repertory?

In Vintage Tabla Repertory, there is a reference to it (In the Rela/Rav section; after relas 30 and 31. See pages 244-247 ; the reference is on p247)

In the context of my ardent wish to be able to play this composition well, I am reminded of a fable my mother often relates. A blind woman finds God, who grants her but one wish. She asks for "I would like to see my grandchild play in my huge courtyard" - in one fell swoop, she has asked for health, wealth and happiness :-)

haha great quote. I just tried this. i can kinda play it at 40bpm. the youtube video is near 55-60bpm. I have a ways to go. thanks for the page in the book. found it!

Wow, what amazing sound quality in that Darbar clip. Wonder how do they do it? (which mic, how mixed, any post-proc etc.?) Of course Nayanji's magic fingers are the ticket, but Darbar's production quality is still mind-blowing. Much respect.

It is Divya sankirna Jati rela (11 beats in 1 or 2 or 4 beats).

This rela, along with a few others of this type, are the only ones performed and taught by almost all the tabla players/teachers, irrespective of their gharana affiliations. They seem to lack imagination. Near the end of Part II and the beginning of Part III of Dr. Pal's book "Step-by-step development of tabla compositions from the ground up," you will find this and many other such relas (close to 150), in every conceivable rhythm, along with complete theory and explanations. Most of these are way better -- aesthetically and musically -- and vastly more interesting than this one, although some of them might be difficult for a beginner to comprehend.
