Hmmm.. interesting!

I think that if the notes are in tune, and the music is appropriate for its context, then it's all good

Those guys on the street are making more money with their sitar than they would be just sitting there, so good for them! It looks like they need the cash.

I also like that it's an authentic expression of folk-pop culture.

Spontaneous, accessible artistic creation using the tools, skills and venues at hand, free for all to enjoy without the barriers of history, repertoire, tickets, publicists, concert halls or even good taste preventing others from sharing the experience.

Without good taste?!?!!?

As long as we keep those bloody hippies away from the good stuff we'll all feel safe in our beds!!

Actually....
I was just thnking about those hippy chops in those late 60s movies. I actually quite like it in a weird way. I used to watch or set the video or now DVD recorder for late night/early morn movies from 1966 to 1975 to see if they had any hippy stuff in them.
Jack Nicholson's Psych-Out is a perfect example.

Peter Sellers' 'The Party' or 'I Love You, Alice B Toklas', a more obscure film.

Another, variously called Angel, Angel, Down We Go or Cult Of The Damned has a great sequence using sitars & drones rather than have some guitarist twanging away.

Barbra Streisand's 'On A Clear Day You Can See Forever' has her brother, Jack Nicholson, doing the typical noodling thing on a surbahar shaped sitar.

I'm sure we could make a great list of movies from these years.

Thank you for the names of the 60's movie where a sitar acting.
I will try to see them all,I know only The Party with seller, was the
few notes he played right or only instant noodle again?

Has anybody here a link or the name of the reality documentation,
where a 60's hippie cummune take drugs ,I remind especially in a guy
who takes a big breath out of his hash pipe and shake his head
while he playing sitar, this psychdelic use, looks amusing and
gave me a weird 60's feeling ,I still have this scene on a old VHS
I will digitalize it ,if nobody knows the link to this vid also often
used in comedy shows, for "look what your parents done in 60's" !

Please post more sitar using movie,I can remind in several 60's movies
about maharatshas and tigers and colonial england where a sitar is to
see but I can't remind the movie titles.

Thanks!

I think it quite likely Peter 'played' the sitar & someone else copied him in a studio & was dubbed over later.

Another slice of 60s hokum from England was 'Smashing Time' with Lynn Redgrave & 60s Scouse stalwart, Rita Tushingham of Merchant Ivory's The Guru fame with Michael York as George Harrison figure going to India to learn the sitar. So really that's 2.

Talking of George... Wonderwall. HELP!!!! That 'helped' bring in the sitar to hippydom. Of course there's Yellow Submarine!!!
Another P Sellers movie, The Magic Christian
British 'This, That & The Other'
Head with the Monkees.
Candy
Peter Fonda in The Trip
Jodorowsky's ultimate acid trip, THE HOLY MOUNTAIN. I have the DVD with stereo soundtrack.
RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP, ALICE IN ACIDLAND, HALLUCINATION GENERATION, THE ACID EATERS, LIKE IT IS and PSYCHED BY THE 4D WITCH.
Barbarella
