I have heard a few playing carnatic music on sitar. But it is not something that is widely adopted practice. I read in an article that Ravishankar played carnatic ragas but not in carnatic style due to difficulties of playing carnatic music in sitar.

For a player, what are the rhythmic patterns of carnatic music that are difficult to play in sitar?

Also what makes saraswathi veena, in contrast to sitar,  the instrument of choice for carnatic music?

Perhaps the sitar lacks enough sustain to handle all the gamak in Carnatic music.
