so I was thinking yesterday.... if I was to compare a Sitar Player to a Guitar Player.. who would be the best matches and why?

This is just for fun and I would like to hear others opinions on this. Either comparing to Guitar Players, Players of other instruments, Sports Icons etc....

This is what I came up with:

Ravi Shankar - Hendrix

-Ravi seems to be somewhat of a pioneer for us westerners and I think has the same type of qualities

Shahid Parvez - Eddie Van Hallen

-Shahid is fast technical and very clear and is somewhat contemporary. Kind of like Eddie is.

Nikhil B. - Eric Clapton

-For the smoothness and all aroundness that Eric seems to have

Niladri Kumar - Steve Vai/Joe Satriani

- he seems to like speed and is very technical

Ashwin Batish - (new) Santana

- he has been around for a long while and kind of went cheezy/commercial like Santana did. But, still has respect

Vilyat Khan - (old) Santana/Les Paul

- he has the pioneer quality, been around a long time and is/was very well respected and knows his stuff.

Again, this is JUST FOR FUN and to pass some time.

Nikhil Banerjee is to Sitar exactly what Andre Segovia is to guitar. Segovia is THE guitar virtuoso and whose standard of playing is really the standard. Go out and buy or download any of his CD's and you'll know withing seconds why I am making this comparison.-Josh

Hey Drew! That's a cool post. I agreed with your assessments on most and it kind of brought a chuckle. I know what sitarmac is saying about Segovia but you could call him clapton (although speedwise he's right up with Eddie!) good fun!

ya maybe I will check him out
but, maybe next time you can leave out the "poor choice" part and just give your own opinion on it without trying to put down someone elses opinion.
Im not exactly sure if you meant it in a light way or maybe you just didnt think about it. but, after all the bobu be nice crap I was pretty shocked to see that and the only thing I can think is "man this guys ego is going to be the end of him one day". I just hope I am wrong about that.

this was meant for no-brainer fun. not a serious "carve in stone" ICM type deal thats going down in the ICM history books.

Dude-
you need to lighten up. I just felt it was not the correct choice of comparison. Whats the big deal......Seems like your ego is the one that got slapped....Not mine.

drew, I'm sure sitarmac can respond for himself, so forvive me but, i think "poor choice" is not a put down at all, just a way of saying he thinks a better choice would be... I didn't see anything remotely nasty about it. Maybe we've all gotten too sensitive after a couple of insult happy members )one of which seems to have bit the dust, thankfully). Keep the good stuff coming! ireally liked the Ashwin-Santana comparison- pretty funny.

thanks man,

im just tryin to have some fun and wanted to hear what others think.

However, I think this is about to turn into a Drew vs. sitarmac war. I hope it doesnt and we can just have some fun with the theme of the post. I guess we shall see. For the record, I dont want to fight.. I just didnt take to well to the "poor choice" comment because really, who cares who picks who for whatever sitar player. Its all in good fun and has no bearing on anything.

now, I need to go and find out who this Segovia fellow is. Is he a solo guy like Satriani or is he part of a band? what style does he play? I guess I will find out once I get to google.

cheers

ok sitarmac, fair enough. I just thought it was odd you were being critical on me rather than just saying "I think a better choice would be" or "I would pick". It was just a little too short and to the point for me not to take it personally when I feel like people are always attacking me for the wrong reasons in this place.

enough said, we both have ego's, we both have been slapped, we will call it a communication breakdown.. no harm done.

I just listened to the clip and I do know it. In fact, I play my own version of this all the time because it really helps me with my finger picking.
I think he is like one of those actors that everyone knows to see but, doesnt know his name. So, everyone knows the songs but, just dont know the name behind them. I guess I should know this because of my guitar playing but whatchya gon'do.

Still though, I cant say yes or no to the Nikhil compare for this guy because well, I just dont know enough about him yet. But, I think I understand where youre coming from with it and if it suits you than cheers to that.

Myself, I was just using the more famous classic guitar players that most laypeople would know.

I also still stick behind my Nikhil - Clapton compare choice

I think that it is a very big compliment to make for both of them. You see, I think that Clapton has this type of "grace" "soul" and "smoothness" to him that puts him on top of most of the other players. Clapton is also very well rounded for many styles and to me has a type of "class" that most others dont have.
Now from what I have heard of the Nikhil stuff I have so far. This seems to be a perfect match.

I must say that Clapton isnt my favorite guitar player. However, I do actually respect him more than I do my favorite players... and you may not know it but out of all the players I chose... Nikhil got the top choice for all around player. The hightest compliment. This is because even though I have only heard a little bit if Nikhil, I can already tell that he probably is the best "all around" sitar player that I have heard so far. Even better than my favorite Ravi Shankar. In fact, I think Nikhil may be catching up to Ravi for my favorite. Time will tell.

Now come on... what do others think? You cant just agree or disagree with my picks. Im sure you have you own picks or would re-arrange the choices I made?

where is Guitar player Tom? Im sure he would have some good choices.

lets do this,,, who would you chose for lets say.. basketball players?

jordan, L Bird, Magic, Rodman, Kareem Abdul, etc...

I would probably match up Ashwin Batish with Rodman. hehehehe
but, Im not going to touch the others.

Yeah this is an intersting thread to me, I guess it's hard to compare players because guitar playing can stretch to rock, classical, jazz and avant garde and alsorts whereas the best sitar playing is mainly withinn the structure of Indian classical music. Maybe I only view the subject like this because I'm a western musician who's more familiar with guitarists than sitar players, I don't know, I'm probably too hung up on nationalities and genres when I should be just enjoying the music. I like the Segovia/Banerjee comparisson. I'm trying to think of a guitarist comparable to Colin Walcott.
