This year's Darbar Festival has started on Skyarts 2 & last night, Sunday, had a lovely performance on sitar from Harmeet Virdee with the superb Bhupinder Chagger. Gayaki syle but with a little Ustad Halim Jaffer Khan thrown in. I don't recall him saying who his guru is/was.

I'm putting a link to a 10 min set of clips & hope I won't get kicked for copyright.
Apologies to anyone concerned!!!
It'll go when we've all had a good look at it. Especially those who can't get the Sky Arts channels.

This is why I did it!!
Why should those who can't get Sky Arts not at least see a little of what they're missing?!?!?!

I'll just put up small edits so no whiner will go on about copyright infringement too much!

Harmeet Virdee's guru is Dharamvir Singh ji. He played at our Summer School concert accompanied by his nephew Gurdain Rayatt on tabla. Harmeet is my tabla guru's Brother-in-Law (I think that's right)....

Here's some links to a few more performance edits.
1st is a Rabab played by Somjit Dasgupta. I've no wish to offend, WATCH IT!!!, but I feel he's a frustrated sarodist & his Raga Kafi might be better on sarod. He was often 'besur' or out of tune on his meends. I find the BLUNT sound of Rabab nowhere near as good a sound as is needed for ICM. Great for folk though! My opinion only, of course!

I also find pointless the Jhoree or Pakhawaj style tabla played here by Sri Sukhwinder Singh. It might as well be on the Pakhawaj for me. See what you all think anyway!

Next actually IS the sarod played by master Pt Tejendra Mazumdar with the ever superb Pt Kumar Bose on tabla. Contrast the differnce as the Pt plays Raga Darbari kanada!!!

Two more from the Fest.

First is a Karnatik Female duet with the stereo miking actually ON this time. We have a spread now as opposed to the lazy mixing of all those before it. It has the tabla, YES tabla, on the left & mridangam on the right. Raga Bihag & V nice & sweet too.

Second is a most sublime performance of Dhrupad singing from Ustad Wasiffuddin Dagar with the ever superb, I see him regularly at Varanasi's Dhrupad Mela, Pt Shyam Sharma on pakhawaj.

I have ONE particular beef with this series! THE PRESENTER, Lopa Kothari.

She's obviously born & bred in London & of Indian origin. While I've nothing against her personally, her bad pronouncing of Indian words is appalling. She sounds JUST like your typical BBC3 announcer we have to suffer at the proms etc!!! Saying them SHARPLY is NOT saying them correctly IMO!
At one point she was 'presenting' to someone on the left of the camera! I know this 'idea' is quite common but I feel it alienates the viewer & I don't feel any contact with what's going on on screen. I've even someone actually presenting ALWAYS to someone right of camera. HORRIBLE!!!
Anyone else feel this?

Now please excuse me while I go lie down in a cool, dark room for a few hours!!!
Enjoy your weekends all!!!

A lovely finale to the Darbar Festival broadcasts on SKY ARTS 2!!
It features Karnatik flute by Sri Shashank Subramaniam & sitar by Sri Purbayan Chatterje. The other artists are all mentioned in the first opening clip. I've included 3 clips rather than just the one as I felt it deserved it. See what you all think.

A great end to a very interesting line-up. WELL DONE!!!! 8)
Pity about the presenter though!!! Pronouncing SHYAM (SHAAM) as SHAI AMM.

You're all most welcome!

I'm having a few days up in the Orkney Islands at the top of Scotland from monday night to sat afternoon so I might not be around.
