here is a wonderful link that is woefully short.

The lengthy intro ends at 1 min in. My wife really likes this and wonders what is being said. Is it a word? Is it konnakol? Something else?

Thanks,

Aruna is singing ”tanam” here. She’s not using words but certain syllables that don’t mean anything. (Now of course some mystic will beat me over the head with a 400-year-old treatise where they have religious meaning.)

You will find more of this in a South Indian form called ”ragam tanam pallavi” or RTP, usually featured to at least some extent in concerts and live recordings. In north Indian dhrupad music you will find a somewhat similar practice called nomtom or jhalla as part of their long alap
