A tabla sitting in an import store display is not necessarily tuned or prepped. Without being able to play or sample it, is there any way to determine the quality of a tabla? Or any signs to avoid?

Hey.

Make sure the person you're buying it from can play it...this will give you a good idea whether or not the person knows their product. OR bring along your teacher and have him/her select the instrument for you...and as a sign of respect/gratitude treat them to lunch. This way you can't go wrong.

Good Luck and have fun!

The measurements (5.5, 5.75, etc) are rim to rim, right? (not lace to lace)

My current dayan is 5" rim to rim, should I get a 5.5" or 5.75"?
(I have a wider palm (3.5") and shorter fingers (3.75-4"))
(bayan = 9" rim to rim)

thanks
