Hello all,

I am very new to sitar, and looking to buy one. I am traveling from Canada to Mumbai in mid-Jan. I will also be in Bagdogra for a day or two. I don't want a really fancy decorative sitar, just something that sounds really nice for my beginner student standard. The only thing I want is a tunable sitar with guitar type lugs to help my get there with tuning faster. are there also any recommended web resources for learning material? Ive looked online and just want to see if I am missing anything. you guys really know what you are taking about, so any help will be appreciated.

Lots of stuff in the shop. Exporting, packing - they do it all. I recommend.
Cheers!

Ashish is fluent with English. Communication will be no problem at all. The tuners are known as "tuners" or "gear tuners" or "guitar tuners". They will know what you mean. I was in their shop last August and recalled seeing a few sitars with the "gear" tuners. They have quite a few "Kanai Lal" sitars there. These are the new "Howrah" badged instruments and should in no way be confused with the supreme Kanai Lal and Brother instruments with the "Upper Chitpur Rd." tag on the badge. For a general purpose sitar, there are dozens at the shop to choose from. The tuners (pegs) are known in Hindi or Marathi as "Kunti". Have fun shopping!
