Pandit Mulgaonkar is not only known as a Tabla maestro but also as the author of a treatise entitled ‘Tabla’ published by Maharashtra Text Book Board, Nagpur in 1975. This book is considered to be a reference book for Tabla in the music circle. Its revised second edition was published by Popular Prakashan, Mumbai in 1999. He is a creative composer and has numerous compositions to his credit. Limited copies of his book “Gustakhi Maaf” consisting of his compositions was published in 1997 for private circulation. As an author he has also written a number of short stories on artistes, published in magazines from time to time. His short notes were also published in Maharashtra Vishwa Kosh, Vai.

For instruction on "How to learn tabla", you don't need a whole book, let alone multiple books. The best printed material I've found was actually on a previous incarnation of this forum. I don't remember the passage precisely, but the key was the bol phrase

Ge Ta Gu Ru
Na Ta Bu Ka

If you learn it well, you'll at least be on the right path. Don't forget to practice your recitation!

Regarding books on the art and practice of tabla (as opposed to the didactics of tabla), I've found David Courtney's series to be a useful reference.

Urgent? Oh, well why didn't you say so in the beginning.
You'll be wanting to pickup (and I only mean that figuratively) "The Massively Complete Authoritative Tabla Technique and Performance Manual - For Those in Very Urgent Need".
Its a rather heavy tome and attempting to actually pick it up may render some of those hand, arm and shoulder muscles needed for delicate execution of bols permanently injured. If you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it, but its worth every dollar of its price and will knock off years of practice you would normally have to endure for the art.

Hello,

I have this book, I'm quite satisfied with it. It explains the origins and history of tabla, the concepts of laya, matra, vibhag, avartan & peshkaar, kaida, rela, gat, chakhradhar, etc...

Contains photo illustrations of fingers positions for each bol. Presents also a little view on differences between Carnatic and Hindustani, and a glossary A-Z with definitions of terms used in the world of tabla.

Also, presentation of tabla gharanas, biographies & anecdotes of many tabla players, and pakhawaj players as well.

Finally, presentation of light taals (Kaherwa, Bhajani, Dadra, plus the variations), and classical compositions: plenty of mukhdas, peshkaars, kaidas, gats, parans, tukhdas, chakradhars in Tintaal, Rupak, Jhaptaal, Ektaal, Matta, & Ada Chautaal.

The book is: "Theory and practice of tabla"

Author: Sadanand Naimpalli (himself a tabla player,
disciple of Pandit Taranath Rao Hattiangadi and a
friend of Zakir Hussain)

Publisher: Popular Prakashan, 2005.

Enjoy !

A study of Tabla by Samir Chatterjee is also very good. It starts with the sitting positions(low level basics) to advanced techniques and compositions. It also comes with a DVD that illustrates the techniques.

The only problem is that it costs $100. But it is worth it.

A book written by Pandit Arvind Mulgaonkar, named " TABLA".
I think its the best book i have ever read in my life and it about the indepth
study of tabla. You might be surprised to know that Ustad Amir Hussain Khan Sahab provided maximum help to Mulgaonkarji to get this book done but before this book was completed, Amir Hussain Khan Sahab passed away in 1969. its almost 32 yrs now since the first edition of this book was published and its still referred as the bible of tabla. You can find some rare and gharanedar pieces like Gat, Chakradhar, Param Tihais, Relas from various Ustaads in this book. The copy which i have is in Marathi but might be that it is published in other languages as well.

Upendra

I found the book Sohum refered to in the university library yesterday. It looked like it was in Hindi, maybe it was translated into hindi, or perhaps Marathi uses the same script. It has been 13 years since I last read anything in Hindi, so I could barely make out the words and sentences. It looked like a very thorough and scholarly book. I wish someone would translate it into English soon.
