Basically I have brought a few (entry level!) Ravi Shankar vinyl lps and have just got one by Baluji Shrivastav (classical Indian ragas) and totally in love with the music. It’s fantastic, yet these are all I have experienced so far. I’ve been a life long music fan but my main genres have typically been hip hop and electronic music.... so looking for some suggestions for artists I would likely appreciate! Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Especially keen on vinyl at the moment too so any specific suggestions would be great. I’m typically an eBay shopper, so if there are better places I could be looking please let me know (ie specialist uk based sites/shops). My apologies for my limited knowledge, not sure if ‘sitar music’ is even the appropriate genre/term. Thanks!

Go to YouTube and listen to Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, Vilayat Khan, Nikhil Banerjee, Indrajit Banerjee, Roopa Penesar, and Shahid Parvez for starters. They all have recordings on the market with some in vinyl form. You can also listen to this online sitar radio station: https://mio.to/show/Instrument/Sitar  Good luck. [thumb]

Hello ladies and gentlmen. My soul is restless because it wants to hear the sound of the Indian music I used to love back in 1994.

So here's what happened in 1994: I started attending Sathya Sai School in Zambia and I fell in love with Indian culture (not that the school encouraged it, but I just fell in love!). At this time, my friend gave me a music cassette which his father brought from India when he went on a business trip. The first time I played the cassette, I felt like heaven had come down to earth! The sound was strangely beautiful! The melodies in the voices of men and women were magical!

The trouble is that I don't know the name of the album let alone the people singing. But I can hum the tunes. 😉 So, is there someone who can help me figure out what these tunes are from me humming the tunes?

Sorry I can’t be the person to help you but I am sure many are willing to try! Good luck with your searching. It is awful when you can’t find a piece of music you love, when you can recall the tune/melody but no other helpful information. I hope you get the answer at some point!

...just another request from me, always incredibly moved by ‘Prayer (traditional) by Jodphur Sikh Temple Congregation’ from The Darjeeling Limited soundtrack. If anyone could help me find similar music I would be very grateful, thanks.

Hope someone can help saistudent, 2 posts up... 🙂
