I saw the pics from the sale, it's shedding! The curse of Kolkata sitars, it's because they use rohlam there. It's a putty during which they dip it in water and if not dried for a good week they the water works its way out via bubbles and separates the finish from the gourd in spots. For a lot of the years its so humid that the drying doesn't happen.
You can ask Keshav Das maybe he might know? If you want to do a more unorthodox finish like this: http://raincitymusic.com/repaired-srishti/rsrishtinewfinish.jpg then I can tell you how to do it via email, it'll 'never' come off.

Hey Lars, how've you been? Yeah it's shedding a bit, has held up pretty nicely though for the 7 years and lots of playing it's gotten. I actually spoke with Keshav today and he said he has a line on someone.

Hey Lars

I have a 40 year old Naskar that also has patches of paint that peeled off the tumba -- no impact on the sound but I have thought of fixing it -- I would love to get the instructions to properly repaint this and have it stick.

Thanks

Kirya
