I am a novice but would like to buy a sitar. I would like to buy something which I will not have to replace in the long run. Any suggestions on makers and dealers would be much appreciated. I am located in NYC. Thanks!!!!

For $1200 you can get a good sitar that can serve you a long time. Quality can vary even amoung the same manufacturer and model. the best approach is to contact a dealer and tell them what you are looking for and get an assessment on their available stock.

I would check the following:

Ali Akbar College Of Music Store at http://www.aacm.org/shop (Bruce and Kalyan post here)

Rain City Music at http://www.raincitymusic.com (Lars posts here)

Tony Karasek at http://www.karaseksound.com (Tony posts here as sitarfixer)

Check out the sites to get a feel but contact them directly as well to discus any specific instruments they may feel are especially nice. Also there may be instruments that have not made it to the web sites yet. All will insure the instrument is properly setup before it is shipped to you.

Good luck and lettuce know what you end up with.
