I agree that it is wise to keep to two semi tones (1 step) at most, (safer at G than at R) on the jod taar itself, but you can go up several notes on kharaj pancham and laraj S. Even there still really only on the the first few frets, maybe up to 4 not like a guitar along the whole fretboard.

Much safer to slide on the jod taar as Ravi Shankar also often does, if you want more than 1 step, even though he would go for a serious meend on the Kharaj P
