I think it's from Kol jawari meaning open as in Pt Ravi Shankar's sound.
To say Open The Door in Urdu/Hindi it would be Dharwaza Kolo.
Close would be Band Karo!

Band Jawari is closed as in Ustad Vilayat Khan style sound.

No, Idont think so, because it is said that Utd. Vilayat Khan gave the concept of gol jawari. I read this somewhere on the internet and at many places.

My teacher, when talking about jawari he wanted on his sitar, mentioned 'gol jawari' and I asked what that means. Hr said "gol means 'round', not too open, not too closed."

Yes THAT'S it. Bit more like Pt Nikhil Banerjee's style.
Ustad Shahid Parvez's tend to be quite closed so you have to work more on it & get strength in your hands!!!
