Hi all again. This wonderful creature arrived this evening, 23 may, at nearly 8 PM !?!?! NEVER had one arrive anywhere near that time before although I AM grateful it arrived & no damage either.
Well worn in the right arm position area. Have changed the strings as you can see from the first few pics to the last 2 after a clean-up & string altering.
Main string jawari wayyyy too open but rest OK. Will work on them all tomorrow.

Any ideas as to age & maker(s)??

Nope, not even close to KL.
Most tabli swans are similar in general style, but they vary widely in quality of execution.
The quality of build on this sitar is a world away from the quality of the KL shop.
KL & Bro was the pinnacle of Indian Lutherie.

Here are some Kanai Lal instruments for comparison.
You can easily see the exceptional quality in them.
Few makers came anywhere near this high level of lutherie.
The first one might be the most beautiful tabli of all time, IMHO.

I have a great book about Kanai Lal and Brother.
It is pretty fascination and is a great look into the maker.
It is called:
Sitar and Surbahar Manufacturing: The Tradition of Kanailal & Brother, Kolkata

I think Lars has it at RainCityMusic.com
Might be able to find it closer to home though.
If you cant find it for sale in the UK, you can probably find it online from Germany.

I've been looking to buy this book for a long time.  Lars didn't have on last time I checked.  If anyone knows of a copy that is available, would appreciate that info.  Thanks.

Many thanks for those pics cwroyd. Have actually seen the Ravi sitar you mention IN the Delhi residence.
Judging by the quality & design on the pics I'm pretty sure I do have one or 2 in my collection.
Will look & put pics ASAP.
