I have a kharaj pancham sitar with 11 tarabs.
Is there a big benefit or difference in sound having 12 or 13 tarabs?
If this has been previously discussed please post link; I couldn't find anything.
Thanks.

Actually I think it was discussed recently in this thread:

Mine has 12. In my view I could easily be happy with either 1 more or 1 less, so its one of the less important factors for me for selecting an instrument.

Ustad Vilayat Khan used 11. Obviously 11 is adequate.
Most of the issues with more than 11 relate to crowding of
tarab pegs and/or insterference with frets or fret ties.

Personally I run 9, so I can gget my fat fingers on the tarab
pegs (access). 9 perfectly tuned beats more if they are not
perfectly in tune. For most rags 9 is plenty. Some people
just hafta have 13.

I could have put 17 on my electric easily - went with 11.
Don't over-analyze, IMHO less is more........
