Listen to this stunningly beautiful rendition of the Mool Mantar, the first lines of the Guru Granth Sahib,
the holy book of the Sikhs.

I wondered for a long time who the sitar player is, now I found out. I could not find any info on the net about this recording but there is one video on youtube that identifies the sitarist beyond a shadow of a doubt.

First to post the correct answer gets a big round of applause from the forumites, ok ?

Nikhil Banerjee is my guess. Otherwise I have no idea but there is something about the phrasing and the meend especially that reminded me
immediately of him.

Congratulations JRJ for being the first to take on the challenge !

This board has 3000 members, I was beginning to wonder if any of the experts here have the guts to take this on.

I have to admit, it's a tricky one , it took me a long time to figure this out.

I am not saying anything right now but all shall be revealed in due course of time, with 100% proof.

Keep going forumites, this is fun !

[smile]

Hint : it is a famous player but which one ? The video on youtube is not very long , it's a proper video of a live performance, not just an audio recording. The key phrases occur in the first 2 min.
Find that video and you have the answer.

This maybe the daughter of an also very famous player? Playing sounds like modern chameleon style? Got no time for youtubing, but over there she is most popular. An I remember a clip where she plays this "evening" rag rather similar.

Ok.

Identify the raga, which is Bhairavi, check out the first 2 min. of the  live sitar videos of Bhairavi on youtube, there are not that many and hey presto, you will find the answer.

Ustad Rais Khan.

Listen to this video between 0'46 and 1'01. No doubt at all, the sitarist on the Mool Mantar recording is either Ustad Rais Khan or one of his disciples.

Next time we need a sponsor ! The winner gets a free bottle of Brasso for polishing his frets !

Was thinking along those lines too but forgot about Rais Khan because you said it was in some way the most famous player of them all. Maybe because of the Bollywood connection?
It can very well be Rais Khan. Sure sounds like it but you don't know for sure I think.

MMM U Rais Khan sahb, eh?
NOT Nikhil-Da & not quite the same touch of phrase of, say, U Shahid Parvez.
If by daughter of a famous player, I hope you're not referring to Anoushka Shankar as NO WAY !!!!!
